Microsoft offers a number of free anti-malware tools. Windows 10 and 8.1 users have Windows Defender. Windows 7 users can chose between the full-featured Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) or the limited Windows Defender. But all Windows users have access to the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) even though they may not be aware of it.
MSRT is part of the monthly patch Tuesday bug fixes. Windows Update downloads a new version of MSRT and runs a scan with it as part of its normal processing. The last patch Tuesday was May 9th and Microsoft dutifully issued a new version of MSRT.
I mention this because on May 23rd someone contacted me to ask why MSRT had just been updated. He had seen a new version appear in Windows Update on a 32 bit Windows 7 machine that had been dutifully updated on the 9th.
I checked a 64 bit Windows 7 machine that had been updated on the 21st. Sure enough, running Windows Update on the 25th, installed a new version of the software (shown above).
The May 9th release was version 5.48.13801, the May 22nd edition is version 5.48.13803. The May 9th edition is 149MB (156,335,152 bytes), the May 22nd version is 126MB (132,223,576 bytes).
What changed? Initially, Microsoft didn't say, the home page for MSRT, had not been updated as of the 25th.
However, when asked, a company representative said that the May 22nd update was 'to detect and remove WannaCrypt malware.' WannaCrypt is another name for WannaCry.
You can run MSRT manually by simply typing 'MRT' into the Run box. Or, you can find it at
C:Windowssystem32MRT.exe
When you run it manually, the initial window has a link to 'View a list of malicious software that this tool detects and removes.' The May 22nd version includes Win32/WannaCrypt in this list, the May 9th version does not.
Running it manually offers the option of a Full scan. https://newtraveler449.weebly.com/mac-tool-for-screen-capture.html. When its run as part of Windows Update, it only does a Quick scan.
MSRT can be downloaded at any time from here. The 32bit edition is currently Windows-KB890830-V5.48.exe, the 64 bit edition is Windows-KB890830-x64-V5.48.exe.
A nice thing about MSRT is that it's portable. You make a copy of MRT.exe on a non-infected PC, rename it to SomethingElse.exe for good luck, and run a full scan with it on an infected machine. Can't hurt.

Microsoft Corp.'s introduction today of two free security tools designed to help users get rid of spyware and other malicious code is a long-overdue move from a company whose software is the biggest target of attacks on the Internet, users and analysts said.
The release of the two new tools also puts the company one step closer to direct competition with the industry's major security vendors, they said.
As expected, Microsoft released a beta version of its Windows AntiSpyware tool, which is based on technology acquired with its purchase last month of Giant Company Software Inc. in New York.
The software is available as a free download from Microsoft's Web site and is designed to help users detect, block and clean up spyware from infected systems, said Amy Carroll, director of Microsoft's security business and technology unit. The software is available for Microsoft Windows 2000 and later versions. https://newtraveler449.weebly.com/sketchup-for-mac-shadows-tool-bar.html.
No decision has yet been made on whether Microsoft will continue to make the tool available for free download or whether it will eventually start charging for it, Carroll said. But there will be at least one more free beta version before general release of a formal antispyware tool, she said.
Microsoft this morning also released a malicious-software-removal tool designed to scan and clean up infected PCs of worms, viruses and other malicious code. The tool consolidates a series of tools that Microsoft has shipped since January 2004, each targeting a single virus, worm or variants, including Blaster, Mydoom and Download.Ject.
The tool, available through Windows Update, is based on technology that Microsoft acquired from its 2003 purchase of Romanian antivirus software maker GeCAD Software. Microsoft plans to update the product with new virus signatures every month along with its monthly patches, Carroll said.
Microsoft's release of an antispyware tool is overdue, said Russ Cooper, editor of the NTBugTraq newslist and an analyst at Herndon, Va.-based TruSecure Corp. 'I think it's about time. Its taken a long time for Microsoft to acknowledge that what's been happening to PCs in terms of Trojans and spyware is a result of mechanisms built into Internet Explorer' designed to add functionality, he said.
Microsoft's move 'really demonstrates how big of a problem spyware has become,' said Andrew Plato, president of Anitian Enterprise Security, a systems integration and consulting firm in Beaverton, Ore.
It will help give security managers 'more pull' when they seek funds for antispyware tools from upper management, said Jarrad Winter, network security manager at the Western United Insurance Co. in Irvine, Calif. 'Now that Microsoft is publicly making it known that this is a problem, spyware will no longer be a throw-it-in-the-corner type of [issue]' in enterprises, he said.
But downloading the beta version is tricky, Plato said. 'Microsoft makes you fill out a lot of forms and run validation checks. This is going to discourage a lot of users and send them over to SpyBot or a competing spyware scanner,' he said.
Microsoft's move builds on the company's efforts to integrate or ship more security tools with its products and takes it closer to directly competing with antivirus vendors such as Symantec Corp. and McAfee Inc.

For the moment, at least, there is nothing about Microsoft's security offerings that should get pure-play vendors 'up in arms,' said Pete Lindstrom, an analyst at Malvern, Pa.-based Spire Security LLC. 'I don't see this as shaking a whole lot of things.'

Best audio editing tool for mac. Most of Microsoft's tools are geared toward the broad-based consumer market, he said. 'The primary vendors [of security products] are going to continue to excel in dealing with this kind of stuff' for enterprises, Lindstrom added.
